Privacy

Short version: nothing is measured unless you press Accept in the cookie banner. If you decline or ignore it, no analytics script loads and no analytics cookies are set.

What I measure and why

I write these notes and want to know which ones help people: which posts get read to the end, which code blocks get copied, which links get clicked, what people search for on the site, and whether pages load fast. That is it. No ads, no selling data, no profiles across other sites.

Google Analytics 4

  • Run by Google. Counts page views and the events above, with a random ID in a first-party cookie (_ga).
  • Google signals and ad personalization are off. Search terms are sent with anything that looks like an email removed.
  • Data can be processed in the United States. Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, which is what covers that transfer.
  • Event data is kept for 14 months, then deleted by Google.

Microsoft Clarity

  • Used on this site for session replays and heatmaps: where people scroll and click, so I can fix confusing pages.
  • All page text and inputs are masked in recordings, so Clarity sees the layout and the clicks, not what you typed or read.
  • It only loads after you accept. Declining tells Clarity consent was withdrawn and stops it.

Where the raw data ends up

The raw Google Analytics events are exported to BigQuery and copied into my own data platform, where I build reports on them. The same events, same rules: no names, no email addresses, nothing you typed into a form. The BigQuery copy is stored in the EU, in my own Google Cloud project (geekindata-analytics).

Changing your mind

Use (also in the footer of every page) and press Decline. Measurement stops, the analytics cookies are deleted, and nothing more is sent. Clearing site data in your browser does the same.
